St. Anthony Hall House was purpose-built in 1907-09 as the new undergraduate chapter house for the Fraternity of Delta Psi (St. Anthony Hall) at the University of Pennsylvania, replacing cramped quarters the group had shared with its alumni association since 1889. The Delta Alumni Association bought the Locust Walk property and hired Cope and Stewardson, the firm already responsible for much of Penn's campus, to design it to match.
the building
Built to match the campus. Cope and Stewardson, who had already designed numerous buildings across the University of Pennsylvania campus, matched the new chapter house's style and materials to those neighbors rather than giving the fraternity a building apart.
the architect
Cope and Stewardson was the Philadelphia firm responsible for much of the University of Pennsylvania's turn-of-the-century campus architecture; the St. Anthony Hall House was one more commission fitted into that body of work.
significance
St. Anthony Hall House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
