Henry Geilfuss designed this Hayes Valley house in 1878 for Charles Dietle, a German-born custom boot maker. It has been a San Francisco Designated Landmark since 1972 and remains a private residence.

the building

Period interior. The 6,950-square-foot house retains a winding main staircase, ornate fireplace mantles, built-in hutches, a dumbwaiter, and a basement ballroom, along with five bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms.

the style

The house combines Eastlake Movement and Stick style ornament, the layered wood detailing typical of San Francisco's Victorian houses.

significance

The house came through the 1906 earthquake and fire in relatively good condition and was sold to John DeMartini, a fruit and vegetable commission merchant and a director of the Bank of Italy, which later became Bank of America. It was used as office space before returning to residential use around 2013.
