Saints Peter and Paul Church, at 666 Filbert Street across from Washington Square in North Beach, has served as the home church and cultural center for San Francisco's Italian-American community since its consecration, earning it the nickname "the Italian Cathedral of the West." The current Romanesque Revival building, completed in 1924 and administered by the Salesians of Don Bosco, replaced an 1884 church destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.
