The Sentinel Building is a copper-clad flatiron tower built in 1907 at the wedge where Columbus Avenue meets Kearny Street, designed by Salfield & Kohlberg in a Beaux-Arts style. Construction was underway during the 1906 earthquake, and the building survived it; it later became the longtime home of Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios.

the building

Copper-clad flatiron form. The building's narrow triangular footprint fills the acute angle where Columbus Avenue crosses Kearny Street, wrapped in a green-patinated copper skin that has made it one of North Beach's most recognizable landmarks.

the style

Beaux-Arts detailing dresses up the tight triangular flatiron site, a distinctive pairing of an ornamental European style with a copper-clad American commercial form.
