Completed in 1916 to house the editorial operations of the Seattle Times, the Times Square Building occupies a full block bounded by 4th Avenue, Olive Way, Stewart Street, and 5th Avenue at 414 Olive Way. Designed by Seattle architects Bebb and Gould, its footprint gave the five-story building a flatiron shape.
the building
Flatiron footprint. Surrounded entirely by streets on all sides, the building's triangular lot forced a flatiron shape onto its five-story Beaux-Arts design.
the style
The Times Square Building is designed in the Beaux-Arts style, giving the newspaper's home a formal, classically ordered presence despite its awkward flatiron lot.
