The East Capitol Car Barn at 1400 East Capitol Street NE was designed by Waddy Butler Wood in 1896 as part of Washington's conversion of its streetcar system to electric traction. It stored buses by 1962, sat vacant after the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority absorbed DC Transit Company in 1973, and was later converted by a private developer into condominiums.
the building
From car barn to condos. Built to house and service streetcars during the shift to electric traction, the barn kept working as a bus garage into the 1960s before WMATA's 1973 takeover of DC Transit left it empty; a private developer later reconfigured the shell into residential condominiums.
the style
Wood designed the barn in the Romanesque Revival style, giving a utilitarian transit building the heavy masonry massing more often reserved for civic architecture of the 1890s.
More on Romanesque Revivalsignificance
Added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 1974, after being converted from a vacant transit facility into condominiums.
