The National Metropolitan Bank Building went up between 1905 and 1907 on 15th Street NW, designed in the Beaux-Arts style by B. Stanley Simmons of the firm Gordon, Tracy & Swartout. In 1986 its facade was preserved and folded into a new office building, Metropolitan Square, designed by Vlastimil Koubek with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

the style

Beaux-Arts (c. 1880–1930): Gilded Age grandeur: paired giant columns, rough-cut stone bases, rooftop sculpture, and monumental stairs.
