what it is
Tropical Modernism applies modernist design (concrete frames, flat or low roofs, plain surfaces) to hot, humid climates, mainly from the 1950s to the 1980s. Buildings have deep roof overhangs, louvres or brise-soleil (fixed screens that block the sun), breeze blocks (perforated concrete blocks that let air through), open corridors and raised floors, all arranged for cross ventilation. Glass curtain walls are generally avoided.
In Sri Lanka, Geoffrey Bawa designed the Bentota Beach Hotel (1967-1969) and the Parliament in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (1979-1982). In Singapore, Design Partnership built the People's Park Complex (1970-1973) and the Golden Mile Complex (1973), which has stepped terraces and an atrium. Mid-century modern houses typically use large glass walls. Tropical modernist buildings shade or replace glass with louvres, screens and perforated blocks, and the Singapore examples are large commercial and residential complexes.

history
Tropical Modernism developed in the 1940s and 1950s from the work of British architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew in West Africa. Drew designed Prempeh College and Mampong Teacher's Training College in Ghana in 1948, and Fry worked on the University of Ibadan in Nigeria (1949-1960). The two then spent three years on housing and public buildings at Chandigarh, India (1951-1954), where Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex used brise-soleil screens. Fry and Drew published Tropical Architecture in the Humid Zone in 1956.
After Ghana's independence in 1957, Fry and Drew's buildings in Accra and the work of Ghanaian architects such as John Owusu Addo (Unity Hall at KNUST) continued the approach. Bawa qualified as an architect in 1957 and later designed the Sri Lankan Parliament. In Singapore, Design Partnership, founded by William Lim, Tay Kheng Soon and Koh Seow Chuan, built the People's Park and Golden Mile complexes in the 1970s. The Golden Mile's shopping mall closed in 2023, and its conservation, after a S$700 million purchase in 2022, is due to finish in late 2029.
