The house at 21 Dartmouth Street is a well-preserved Queen Anne style house built around 1890 in Somerville, Massachusetts, possibly for Rufus Stickney, one of the developers active in the area at the time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
the building
Front gable projection. The house's most distinctive feature is its front gable end, which contains a projecting box holding a pair of windows, carried on brackets and topped by an entablature — a showpiece detail typical of high-Victorian Queen Anne design.
Shingle banding. The upper floors are wrapped in bands of decoratively cut shingles, adding textured relief to the 2.5-story wood-frame massing.
the style
The projecting gable box and decorative shingle bands are hallmarks of the Queen Anne style's love of surface texture and asymmetry, applied here to a suburban wood-frame house rather than a grand villa.
