Langmaid Terrace at 359–365 Broadway in Somerville's Winter Hill neighborhood is a brick apartment complex built in 1891 by the heirs of local landowner Samuel P. Langmaid, designed by the Boston architect J. Pickering Putnam. It gained modern notice as the residence of Barack Obama from 1988 to 1991, while he attended Harvard Law School.
the building
Queen Anne massing. The building is Queen Anne in inspiration, with multiple roof lines, gables, and towers of varying heights and styles; dormers project from its mansard roof, faced with stepped brick.
the style
Contemporaries described the building as architecturally eclectic: Queen Anne massing and towers combined with a mansard roof, an unusual pairing for the style.
