The J. A. Wood House at 3 Sacramento Street was built in 1888 for lumber dealer James Wood, designed by Hartwell and Richardson. It originally faced Massachusetts Avenue, but in 1925 the entire house was rotated ninety degrees to face Sacramento Street instead, clearing the way for commercial development on the avenue. Since 1958 it has housed Harvard's Dudley Co-op, an alternative student housing cooperative whose alumni include Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!.

the building

Rotated to make way for commerce. In 1925 the house was turned ninety degrees on its lot so it would face Sacramento Street rather than Massachusetts Avenue, freeing up the avenue frontage for commercial buildings.

A Tuscan-columned portico. The five-bay house sits under a hip roof pierced by three dormers, with a left-side ell set back from the main block and a gable-front entry portico carried on paired Tuscan columns.

the style

Colonial Revival, expressed here in a broad hip-roofed massing with a classical, Tuscan-columned entry portico.
