Built in 1914 for the Paine Furniture Company — at one time the largest furniture company in New England — this ten-story Classical Revival building on Park Square housed the company's showrooms, offices, and manufacturing facilities. Designed by Densmore and LeClear, it occupies the entire block between St. James and Stuart Streets on Arlington Street.
the building
Steel frame and limestone. The building rises ten stories on a steel frame, faced in limestone, filling its full block on Park Square — scaled to hold showroom, office, and manufacturing space for the region's largest furniture retailer under one roof.
the style
The building was designed in a Classical Revival style, dressing up a combined showroom, office, and factory building with the kind of civic-scaled dignity more often reserved for public buildings on its prominent Park Square site.
