The Smith-Petersen House is a historic residence at 32 Farlow Road in Newton, Massachusetts, built in 1902 as one of the city's finest Georgian Revival houses, dressed up with a Neoclassical portico. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and folded into the Farlow Hill Historic District in 1990.
the building
The Greek portico. The main facade centers on a massive Greek portico with two-story columns, rising to a fully pedimented gable pierced by an oculus window in its tympanum -- the kind of grand entrance gesture that announces the house's Neoclassical ambitions.
the style
Built in 1902, the house blends Georgian Revival form with Neoclassical detail: a 2 1/2-story rectangular block under a hip roof, flanked by two-story wings, given monumental weight by its columned portico and pediment.
More on Neoclassicalsignificance
