77 West Wacker Drive is a 51-story office skyscraper in the Loop, completed in 1992 to a design by Ricardo Bofill's firm, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. Rising 668 feet with about 944,000 square feet of interior space, it brought a classically inspired postmodern silhouette to the Chicago River skyline at a moment when law firms and corporations were being courted out of older Loop towers like the Sears Tower.
the building
A tenant in flux. The building has carried three corporate names in three decades: it opened as the RR Donnelley Building for its principal tenant, became the United Building after United Airlines moved its headquarters there in 2007, and took on Archer Daniels Midland as its anchor tenant in August 2014 when ADM relocated from Decatur, Illinois. United had already left for Willis Tower in 2012.
the style
The tower's postmodern design pairs a classically inspired granite facade with a conventional glass-and-steel office block behind it, a combination noted for its dramatic riverfront presence in the Loop.
