The historic South Tower of the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile opened in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club, commissioned by the Chicago Shriners Club and designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. The Shriners paid roughly $1 million for the site at Michigan Avenue and Illinois Street, just north of the Tribune Tower, and another $5 million to build and equip the 42-story club, which was planned to serve 3,500 Shriner members on the eve of the 1929 stock market crash.

the building

Two towers, two eras. The 471-foot, 42-story South Tower dates to 1929 as the original Medinah Athletic Club; a 295-foot, 26-story North Tower was added in 1961, and the hotel now occupies both buildings together.

significance

The building is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, marking its path from private Shriners athletic club to hotel.
