The Robert P. Parker House at 1019 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892, while he was still an employee of Adler & Sullivan — moonlighting on a commission his employer had expressly forbidden. Real-estate agent Thomas H. Gale had the Queen Anne house built and sold it to Robert Parker later that year.
the building
One of the 'Bootleg Houses'. The Parker House is one of three homes along Chicago Avenue — alongside the Thomas H. Gale House and the Walter Gale House — that Wright designed on the side while drawing a salary from Adler & Sullivan. He was moonlighting to help pay off a loan Louis Sullivan had made him to build his own home and studio; taking outside commissions was against Sullivan's rules.
the style
The house is built in the Queen Anne style, the prevailing residential fashion of the early 1890s and a mode Wright would soon abandon as he developed his own Prairie idiom.
