The Shedd Park Fieldhouse is the Prairie School fieldhouse at the center of Shedd Park in South Lawndale, on land the retail magnate John G. Shedd gave the city. William Drummond designed the brown brick, limestone-trimmed building, completed in 1916 as a neighborhood gathering place rather than a monument.

the building

1928 gymnasium addition. In 1928 the architects Michaelsen and Rognstad added a Prairie School gymnasium onto Drummond's fieldhouse, extending the building's low, horizontal brick-and-limestone language rather than breaking with it.

the style

Drummond worked in brown brick with limestone trim, the understated, horizontally banded material palette typical of Prairie School public buildings, keeping the fieldhouse close to the ground and in conversation with the park around it.
