St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran School at 2101-2107 W. 21st Street was built in 1882 as one of the only Italianate school buildings in Chicago. Italianate was common for homes and storefronts in the second half of the 19th century but rarely used for institutional buildings, making this school an unusual application of the style.

the building

Italianate details. The school's tall windows carry arched lintels above a symmetrical front facade, capped by a double bracketed cornice and a cupola on the roof.

the style

Built in the Italianate style at a time when Chicago mostly reserved it for houses and commercial buildings, giving an ordinary parochial school an unusually decorative treatment.
