Minoru Yamasaki designed the arc-shaped, 19-story Century Plaza as the centerpiece of Century City, built on roughly 180 acres that 20th Century Fox sold off in 1961 after a string of box-office flops culminating in Cleopatra. When it opened in 1966 with 750 rooms, it was the tallest building in Century City, with views reaching the Pacific Ocean, and the first hotel to put color televisions in every room.

the building

A city within a city. Developer William Zeckendorf and Alcoa built Century Plaza as the anchor of Century City, a planned district on former studio backlot; doormen wore red Beefeater costumes and the hotel launched in 1966 under Western International Hotels.

significance

The hotel was individually designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #1060 in 2013 and has been listed among America's Most Endangered Historic Places. It closed for renovation in 2016 and reopened in 2021 as the Fairmont Century Plaza, a member of Historic Hotels of America.
