Built in 1904 in the West Adams neighborhood for Frederick H. Rindge and his wife Rhoda May Knight Rindge, this house was designed by Frederick Roehrig with E.C. Shipley in a Renaissance Revival-Romanesque Revival Victorian style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 on architectural grounds.

the style

The house blends Romanesque Revival massing with Renaissance Revival detailing, a Victorian-era combination that predates the Mediterranean and Spanish Revival styles that would later define much of West Adams.

significance

Frederick Rindge is better known for what he did after this house was built: in 1892 he had purchased the 13,300-acre Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit, later expanded to 17,000 acres as the Rindge Ranch encompassing present-day Malibu. After his death, Rhoda May Rindge ran the ranch, its oil derrick, and its railroad, and went on to found Rindge Dam, Malibu Potteries, and what became Serra Retreat. The house is a designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument as well as a National Register listing.
