The Garfield House was built in 1904 in South Pasadena for Lucretia Garfield, widow of President James A. Garfield, and designed by Greene and Greene in the American Craftsman style the firm helped originate. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since April 24, 1973.

the style

The house is an early, 1904, example of American Craftsman design from Greene and Greene, the Pasadena firm most responsible for defining the style.

the architect

Greene and Greene, the Pasadena firm of Charles and Henry Greene, designed the Garfield House early in their career; the firm went on to become the leading originators of the American Craftsman style in Southern California.

significance

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since April 24, 1973, the house later had an unusual second life: musician and producer Joe Henry lived there with his family and ran a recording studio in the basement for nine years.
