The Howard Longley House is one of the earliest surviving residences by Greene and Greene, built in 1897 as job no. 23 in the firm's records — a $3,876 commission for Howard and Etta Longley at 1005 Buena Vista Street in South Pasadena. Longley was connected to the Greenes by marriage, as the brother-in-law of Alice, sister of Charles and Henry Greene's father.
the building
Neighbor to a president's widow. The Longley House stands next to the Lucretia Garfield House, which Greene and Greene designed in 1904 for the widow of President James Garfield.
the architect
Charles and Henry Greene were early in their partnership when they designed this house in 1897 — job no. 23 in their records — making it one of the earliest surviving examples of their work, years before the mature Craftsman style that made them famous.
significance
The Howard Longley House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 1974.
