Opened in 1907 above the Arroyo Seco in the Mount Washington hills, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian was designed by architect Sumner Hunt to house a major collection of Native American art and artifacts, along with pre-Hispanic, Spanish colonial, Latino, and Western American material. Later absorbed by the Autry Museum, its holdings rank second in the country only to the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
