Perched on a hilltop in Highland Park, the Smith Estate — also called El Mio, the family's own name for the house — was designed in 1887 by architect Abram M. Edelman in the Queen Anne style for Judge David Patterson Hatch, reportedly at a cost of $10,000. The street below, El Mio, takes its name from the house itself.

Notable residents. Beyond Judge Hatch, who wrote books on occultism, the house was later home to the head of the Los Angeles Railway and a deputy mayor of Los Angeles.

the style
Edelman designed the Smith Estate in the ornamented Queen Anne style, its hilltop perch and Victorian detailing making it a landmark of 1880s Highland Park.
