Brookfield Place, long known as the World Financial Center, is a shopping and office complex in Battery Park City, across West Street from the World Trade Center and overlooking the Hudson River. It was designed by César Pelli, with landscape work by Diana Balmori Ling, and built by Olympia and York from 1983 to 1988 on landfill reclaimed using excavated soil and rock from the original World Trade Center construction.
the building
Built on reclaimed land. The complex sits on Battery Park City landfill, ground created from the soil and rock excavated during construction of the World Trade Center, turning a Hudson River construction byproduct into buildable waterfront acreage.
Winter Garden Atrium. The Winter Garden Atrium suffered major structural damage to its glass and steel frame during the September 11 attacks, which also damaged the lobby and lower floors' granite cladding and glass. It was rebuilt and ceremonially reopened on September 11, 2002.
the style
Pelli designed the complex in a modern architectural idiom suited to a large waterfront office and retail campus, giving it the scale and glass-and-steel presence that let its atrium double as a public winter garden.
