The original World Trade Center was a seven-building complex in Lower Manhattan, built primarily between 1966 and 1975 and dedicated on April 4, 1973, at a core cost of about $400 million. David Rockefeller had proposed the complex to help stimulate urban renewal in Lower Manhattan. Its Twin Towers, at 1,368 and 1,362 feet, were briefly the tallest buildings in the world, and the tallest twin towers anywhere until Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers surpassed them in 1996. The complex was destroyed on September 11, 2001, when two hijacked planes struck the towers.

the building

Seven buildings, one complex. Beyond the Twin Towers, the site held the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC) and Buildings 4, 5, 6, and 7, together holding 13,400,000 square feet of office space projected to accommodate about 130,000 people.

the style

International Style (c. 1925–1975): Glass walls hung on exposed steel or concrete grids: weightless, ornament-free, and endlessly repeatable.
