The Home Life Insurance Company Building combines two adjacent structures at 253-257 Broadway, erected between 1892 and 1894 next to City Hall Park. The 16-story Home Life Building at 256 Broadway was designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons in the Renaissance Revival style for the Home Life Insurance Company, while the 13-story Postal Telegraph Building at 253 Broadway was designed by George Edward Harding & Gooch in the neoclassical style for the Postal Telegraph Company.

the building

Two facades, one block. The original Home Life Building is clad in marble, while the Postal Telegraph Building's facade is limestone at the base and brick above. Both carry ornamental detailing. Though planned as 12 stories, 256 Broadway was expanded to 16 stories mid-construction.

the style

The Home Life Building was designed in the Renaissance Revival style and the neighboring Postal Telegraph Building in the neoclassical style, giving the combined structure two distinct period facades side by side.
