St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine sits in Liberty Park at the World Trade Center, overlooking the National September 11 Memorial. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and consecrated on July 4, 2022, it replaced the original St. Nicholas church destroyed in the September 11 attacks — the only house of worship, and only building outside the original World Trade Center complex, completely destroyed that day.

the building

Byzantine references. Calatrava's design draws on Byzantine architecture, referencing the Church of the Savior and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul as well as the Parthenon in Athens.

the style

The church is described as Romanesque, developed by architect Santiago Calatrava with Byzantine influences drawn from the Hagia Sophia and the Church of the Savior in Istanbul, and from the Parthenon.
