Completed in 1964 as headquarters for the chemical manufacturer Rohm and Haas, this nine-story tower two blocks from Independence Hall was the first private investment in the urban renewal of the Independence Mall area. Architect Pietro Belluschi, working with the George M. Ewing Co., designed a building Philadelphia's city planners held up as a standard for the whole redevelopment, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
the building
Plexiglas sunscreens. Aluminum lattices across the facade support translucent, corrugated sunscreens made of Plexiglas, the acrylic sheet that was Rohm and Haas's own signature product -- the building wears its client's merchandise.
the style
Belluschi's design is considered one of the best examples of the International Style in Philadelphia, praised on completion for its restraint alongside Independence Hall and the historic buildings of the Mall.
