Wilson Eyre House
- City
- Philadelphia, PA
This Washington Square West rowhouse was built between 1830 and 1835 as an ordinary three-story brick dwelling. In 1909 the prominent Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre bought the house and added a three-story brick extension of his own, then lived here until his death in 1944. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
the building
Eyre's 1909 addition. The original 1830s house was a plain three-story brick dwelling with a low-to-medium roof and dormer. When Wilson Eyre bought the property in 1909, he added his own three-story brick extension, turning an ordinary rowhouse into the home he'd occupy for the rest of his life.
the architect
Wilson Eyre (1858-1944) was a prominent Philadelphia architect who purchased this house in 1909, extended it, and lived here until his death in 1944 — making the building a piece of his own biography rather than just another commission.
significance
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
