Kaufmann's Building opened in 1898 as the flagship of the Kaufmann's department store, owned in the early 20th century by Edgar J. Kaufmann, the same patron who later commissioned Fallingwater. At its peak the chain ran roughly 59 stores across five states before a chain of corporate acquisitions carried it through May Department Stores, Federated Department Stores, and the Filene's organization, ending when Macy's retired the Kaufmann's name in 2006. Macy's closed and sold the Pittsburgh flagship for redevelopment in 2015.

significance

The building holds a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark designation. After Macy's sold it in 2015, Core Realty of Philadelphia acquired the property and named the redevelopment 'Kaufmann's Grand on Fifth' in honor of the store's history.
