The Commercial Union Assurance Building is a 16-story, 308-foot office tower in the Financial District, completed in 1921 to the designs of George W. Kelham. It stands exactly as tall as San Francisco City Hall, though it's since been dwarfed by the much taller 555 California Street rising just to its west.
the building
From offices to coworking. Floors 9 and 10, once conventional office space, have been converted into flexible coworking floors, a reuse that keeps a 1921 tower earning its keep in a modern leasing market.
the style
Kelham designed the building in the Renaissance Revival style, giving the Financial District tower a classical stone dignity in keeping with the era's bank and insurance headquarters.
