The Italian American Bank building at 460 Montgomery Street replaced an earlier seven-story bank building destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. Built in 1907 by the firm Howard & Galloway, headed by architect John Galen Howard, during the city's post-quake reconstruction, the two-story structure used steel-reinforced concrete, brick, and granite.

Reconstruction-era materials. The 1907 replacement building used steel-reinforced concrete alongside brick and granite, reflecting downtown San Francisco's shift toward fire-resistant construction after 1906.

significance

The building has been a San Francisco Designated Landmark since April 6, 1980. It was later joined to the neighboring 1908 Borel & Co. building through facadism to form 456 Montgomery Plaza.
