The International Hotel, known locally as the I-Hotel, was a low-income single-room-occupancy hotel in San Francisco's Manilatown, home to a large Filipino American population and, from around 1954, the basement home of Enrico Banducci's original hungry i nightclub. Established in 1854 and rebuilt in 1907 after the 1906 earthquake, it became a flashpoint in the late 1960s when developers moved to evict its elderly tenants. All residents were evicted on August 4, 1977, the building was demolished in 1981, and a replacement opened in 2005.

The hungry i. Around 1954, the hotel's basement housed Enrico Banducci's original hungry i nightclub, one of San Francisco's storied entertainment venues.

Eviction and rebuilding. Activists, students, and tenants organized against demolition through the late 1960s and 70s. Tenants were evicted on August 4, 1977, the hotel was torn down in 1981, and the rebuilt hotel reopened in 2005, now sharing space with St. Mary's School and Manilatown Center.

the style

The 1907 rebuilding, after the 1906 earthquake destroyed the earlier building, was done in the Neoclassical style.
