The Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) was founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2000 as the Experience Music Project, housed in a Frank Gehry-designed building whose sculptural, metal-clad form gave it a landmark presence at Seattle Center. Since then the museum has organized dozens of exhibits, 17 of which have toured the United States and internationally.

the building

A museum, renamed three times. MOPOP has gone by several names since 2000: Experience Music Project, then Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP|SFM), then EMP Museum, before adopting its current name in November 2016.

Sound Off! and Pop Conference. The museum runs 'Sound Off!,' an annual battle-of-the-bands competition for musicians 21 and under that supports the local all-ages music scene, and 'Pop Conference,' an annual gathering of academics, critics, and musicians. Since 2007 it has also presented the Founders Award to recording artists for their contributions.
