Old Fire Station #18 went up in 1911 at 5427 Russell Ave NW, designed by the Seattle firm of Charles Bebb and Louis Mendel. The city landmarked it in 1976, and it has since been converted away from firefighting duty, one of Ballard's small stock of adaptive-reuse survivors from that era.
the architect
Charles Bebb and Louis Mendel practiced together as a Seattle architectural firm in the early 1900s, and Old Fire Station #18 stands as one of their surviving works from that partnership.
significance
The station is an individually designated Seattle City Landmark (#11), listed on December 13, 1976, and survives today converted to another use — a rare trace of the city's early fire-department building stock.
