Completed in 1903 to serve the Reno community west of Rock Creek Park and north of Georgetown, this school was designed by Snowden Ashford, the District's municipal architect, and served segregated African American students until it closed in 1950, when the Reno community was evicted to create Fort Reno Park. The building was later a Civil Defense office, then a special-education school known as the Rose School, and was restored in 2015 as a wing of Alice Deal Middle School.

the style

Ashford designed the school in a Renaissance style typical of his early-1900s District public school commissions.

Snowden Ashford served as the District of Columbia's municipal architect and designed the Reno School in 1903 as part of the city's segregated public school system.

significance

Individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites since 2009, ahead of its 2015 restoration; despite the National Register name, no documentation ties the building to Civil War general Jesse L. Reno.
