The Adams Claflin House at 156 Grant Avenue in Newton Centre was built in 1890 to a design by Samuel Brown for Adams Davenport Claflin, son of Massachusetts Governor William Claflin. Claflin was a major Newtonville landowner, president of the Boston and Suburban Electric Company, and a major developer of the streetcar system that served Newton; he later served as president of Norumbega Park in Auburndale from its 1897 opening.

the building

Queen Anne and Colonial Revival details. The large 2½-story cross-gable, wood-frame house shows vestiges of the Queen Anne style in its asymmetrical massing and profusion of projections and gables, alongside Colonial Revival elements such as a Palladian window and a pedimented front porch.

the style

Though often labeled Queen Anne, the house actually blends Shingle-style form with vestiges of Queen Anne — asymmetrical massing and multiple gables — and Colonial Revival touches like a Palladian window and pedimented porch.
