The Kingsbury House at 137 Suffolk Street in Newton's Chestnut Hill neighborhood is one of only a few First Period houses to survive in the city. The oldest section of its two-and-a-half-story timber frame may date to as early as 1686, though the exterior detailing suggests the house was built or rebuilt in the early 18th century, incorporating the earlier structure into new construction. For much of the 19th century it was linked to the Kingsbury family, major landowners in Chestnut Hill.
the style
The house sits between two building traditions, its early First Period timber frame reworked with Georgian-era exterior styling, reflecting construction that spanned the late 17th into the early 18th century.
More on Georgiansignificance
Individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and folded into an expansion of the Old Chestnut Hill Historic District in 1990.
