The house at 81 Pearl Street in Somerville is a well-preserved Italianate house built around 1860, among the best-preserved examples of the period's worker housing in East Somerville. An early occupant was Benjamin Gage, a machinist.

the building

Bracketed front gable. The 2½-story wood-frame house has a deep front gable with paired decorative brackets, and a front porch on square columns finished with an unusual scalloped-arch cornice trim.

the style

Its Italianate detailing — paired brackets on the gable and a scalloped-arch cornice on the porch — was applied to what was otherwise standard worker housing in East Somerville.
