The Broadway Winter Hill Congregational Church, now home to Vida Real Church, is a wood-frame Shingle style building at 404 Broadway in Somerville, built in 1890-91 by Hartwell and Richardson for a Congregationalist parish founded in 1865. It's one of Somerville's few examples of Shingle style architecture and one of its finer architect-designed nineteenth-century buildings.

the building

Turret and tower. The ground floor is finished in stone with shingles covering the upper sections. The main gable holds three stained-glass windows under transom-like panes, a circular two-story turret with a conical roof projects from the gable's left end, and a tall square tower housing the main entrance projects toward Central Street.

the style

Shingle style, rare in Somerville, shows here in the continuous shingled skin over the upper floors, the corner turret, and the asymmetrical massing -- the picturesque, textured vocabulary the style brought to the American parish church.
