The building at 551 Warren Street was constructed in 1888 as All Souls Unitarian Church, designed by architect J. Williams Beal in a Tudor Revival style. It later became home to the Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church, whose congregation traces back to 1833, making this one of Boston's storied Black church buildings. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

the style

Beal gave the building a Tudor Revival design, a choice that set it apart from the plainer meetinghouses typical of the congregations that would later occupy it.

significance

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The congregation itself dates to 1833, when Reverend Noah Caldwell organized it on Belknap Street on Beacon Hill; in 1839 the Massachusetts legislature chartered it as the First African Methodist Episcopal Bethel Society of Boston, and its earlier home on Anderson Street was a site of abolitionist meetings before the Civil War.
