The John Souther House is a historic house at 43 Fairmont Street in Newton, Massachusetts, built around 1883 as a well-preserved, high-style example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

the building

Turret and textured shingles. The basically rectangular house is made distinctive by varied gable dormers, projecting sections, a turret, and rounded wall sections. Decoratively cut shingles texture the wall surfaces, and the porch carries ornate decoration.

Period carriage house. The property still includes its original carriage house, a rare surviving piece of the estate's Victorian-era outbuildings.

the style

This is called out as a 'high style' Queen Anne house -- its asymmetry, turret, and decorative shingle work are treated as an especially full expression of the style rather than a simplified version of it.
