The New England Conservatory is the country's oldest independent music school, founded in Boston in 1867 by a nineteen-year-old music teacher named Eben Tourjée who set out to build an American equivalent of Europe's great conservatories. It sits on Huntington Avenue along the Avenue of the Arts near Symphony Hall, carrying National Historic Landmark and National Register status alongside a pending Boston Landmark designation (#141). Today it trains roughly 750 undergraduate and graduate students, with another 1,500 enrolled in its Preparatory School and School of Continuing Education, and it runs joint five-year degree programs with Harvard and Tufts.
