Hotel Green began as an unfinished 1887 project by developer Edward C. Webster, who went insolvent before completing it; George Gill Green bought the building, doubled its size, and opened the hotel in 1894 to Frederick Roehrig's 1893 design. It quickly became a social and cultural center for Pasadena, later housing the Valley Hunt Club and the Tournament of Roses association.

the building

A complex of three. Green kept expanding, adding a 'Central Annex' in 1898 that came to be known as Castle Green and a 'North Annex' in 1903, turning the original hotel into a three-building complex between Raymond Avenue and the Santa Fe Railroad tracks.

the style

Roehrig designed the original hotel in the Mediterranean Revival style, a fitting choice for Pasadena's role as a winter resort town for wealthy visitors in the 1890s.
