Los Angeles architect J. H. Bradbeer designed the Stoutenburgh House in 1893 for John and Mary Stoutenburgh, a prominent local couple, at 255 S. Marengo Ave. in Pasadena. John died in 1904, but Mary continued to live in the house into the 1920s. The house underwent extensive restoration between about 1980 and 1983.

the building

Bandsaw-carved porches. Multiple porches wrap the house with turned columns and brackets cut by bandsaws, set beneath a roofline with many gables and finished in patterned shingle siding. An original carriage house still stands on the property.

the style

The house's Queen Anne detailing -- a multi-gabled roof, turned-column porches, bandsaw-cut brackets, and patterned shingle siding -- reflects the ornamental, asymmetrical style at the height of its popularity in the 1890s.
