The John Henry and Emily Vanderbilt Sloane Hammond House at 9 East 91st Street is a Beaux-Arts townhouse completed in 1903 as the residence of lawyer John Henry Hammond and his wife. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1974 and today houses the Russian Federation's Consulate General.

the building

The facade. Five stories rise in limestone, rusticated across the lowest two floors with stone quoins marking each corner; the second story is treated as a piano nobile, and the windows shrink progressively toward the top, an arrangement typical of the Beaux-Arts vocabulary.

the style

The house is a Beaux-Arts townhouse whose rusticated base, piano nobile, and diminishing upper-floor windows are hallmarks of the style, giving the facade a legible hierarchy from street level up.
