Grace Cathedral crowns Nob Hill for the Episcopal Diocese of California, built to replace the parish's original church, destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. Fundraising and construction stretched across decades: work began in 1927, the cathedral came into use in 1934, and final construction was not completed until 1964, under architect Lewis P. Hobart's Gothic Revival design.

the building

Gates of Paradise. The cathedral's doors are a cast replica of Lorenzo Ghiberti's Renaissance masterpiece, the Gates of Paradise, gathered inside alongside murals by Jan Henryk De Rosen and two labyrinths laid out for walking meditation.

Keith Haring's AIDS chapel. Grace Cathedral holds an altarpiece by Keith Haring in its AIDS memorial chapel, alongside David LaChapelle's Our Lady of the Flowers, a pairing of contemporary art with the cathedral's medieval-styled furnishings, forty-four-bell carillon, and three organs.

the style

Grace Cathedral's Gothic Revival design gives Nob Hill a medieval-cathedral silhouette that was only completed in 1964, decades after the parish broke ground on the project in 1927.
