Denny Hall is the oldest building on the University of Washington's current campus, built of brick and sandstone between 1894 and 1895 to designs by Charles Saunders. Its cornerstone was laid in July 1894 before a crowd of about 1,000, and it was originally known simply as the Administration Building.

the building

Renamed for Arthur Denny. In 1910 the building was renamed Denny Hall after Arthur A. Denny, one of the founders of Seattle and an early benefactor of the university.

Cupola bell. A 400-pound bell is installed in Denny Hall's cupola, and an engraving of the building appears on the University of Washington's ceremonial mace.

Decades-long renovation. A $56 million renovation begun in 2008 was stalled by the Great Recession, then resumed in 2014 and completed in 2016.

the style

Denny Hall is built in the French Renaissance Revival style, expressed through its brick-and-sandstone construction.
