The Edward R. Hills House, also known as the Hills-DeCaro House, stands at 313 Forest Avenue in Oak Park, where Frank Lloyd Wright reworked an existing late-19th-century Stick style house into a Prairie-style residence during a 1906 remodel. The result melds two distinct phases of Wright's career, marrying his mature Prairie vocabulary to a structure moved and rebuilt on the same lot.

the building

A house rebuilt more than once. Wright's 1906 remodel moved and essentially rebuilt the original Stick style house. Later alterations between 1912 and 1965 obscured parts of his design, and a major fire in 1976 destroyed or damaged much of the building, which was immediately reconstructed and has since undergone further partial restorations.

the style

The 1906 remodel was carried out in Wright's signature Prairie style, the horizontal, low-slung idiom he was then developing across Oak Park, layered here onto an older 19th-century frame.
